First opened in the early 19th century, Shap Wells Hotel has welcomed travellers for almost 200 years. From its origins as a Victorian spa retreat to its role in present day, the building’s story is woven into the landscape that surrounds it.
Shap Wells Hotel was originally established in the early 1830s, opening its doors in 1832–1833 to serve visitors drawn to the nearby Shap Spa.
The natural mineral spring, rich in saline and brine, was believed during the Victorian era to offer restorative health benefits, attracting guests seeking wellness, fresh air and the tranquillity of the surrounding valley. Purpose-built to accommodate this growing interest, the hotel quickly became known as a place of rest, recovery and refined countryside hospitality.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Shap Wells Hotel developed a strong reputation as a welcoming stop for travellers moving between England and Scotland.
Its location made it a natural resting point for coach journeys, while its comfortable accommodation and attentive service appealed to both leisure visitors and long-distance travellers. During this period, the hotel continued to evolve while retaining much of its original character and charm.
During the Second World War, the hotel took on a very different purpose. Its secluded setting and solid structure led to it being requisitioned for use as a Prisoner of War camp, known as Camp 13/15.
German naval and Luftwaffe officers were housed within the building under armed guard, marking a unique and significant chapter in the hotel’s history.
Following the war, Shap Wells Hotel reopened to civilian guests in 1947, entering a new era as tourism and travel began to grow once more. Over the following decades, the hotel expanded its facilities, enhancing guest accommodation, dining areas and conference spaces to meet changing expectations. Its role as a base for exploring the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Scottish Borders became firmly established.
Today, nearly two centuries after it first welcomed guests, Shap Wells Hotel continues to balance its rich heritage with modern comfort. Surrounded by unspoilt countryside and steeped in history, the hotel remains a distinctive destination where past and present meet.
